Don't Give Up - Keep Going
Updated: Jun 12, 2020
Having been raised in the church, there are many sayings that seem to be "churchy" sayings. Sadly I don't think people seriously understand what they are saying, but it sounds good, and it's in the Bible. So we sometimes just repeat what we have heard, what sounds good and Christian like. In action, however, it takes diligent accountability, so sometimes we drift in our attention to the details or staying focused.
As parents, we have all had our kids say "show me how," but during the process of showing them, they just check out. You can tell by the look on their face that they have stopped listening, or better yet, they just walk away. I wonder if that is how we treat God when we say, "Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths." Psalms 25:4
How many times do we request help or instructions from the Lord only to check out halfway through? We ask in earnest desire to know him better and do his will. We may say, "Show me, Lord, teach me your way," only to lose focus for multiple reasons later down the road. I feel many times I suffer from a weak attention span. As Paul referred to it in Romans, "the things I want to do, I don't do. And the things that I don't want to do I do. Oh what a wretched man am I."
So what is the answer? "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming," to quote Dori. We don't give up; we continue to ask him. He will continue to show us and teach us. We will become more reliant on him and learn to trust him more and more. He is so faithful to hear our requests and to answer when we pray to him in humility and honesty. In truth, isn't it all a heart condition anyway? We look at the outward performance type things. God looks at the heart, at our true intentions. So we must never stop asking, and never stop trying to be all we can be with the Lord.
"Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name." Psalms 86:11 NIV
