If You Can't Say Anything Nice...

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” Psalms 19:14 NKJV Who remembers “the Thumperian Principle,” also known as “Thumper’s Rule?” Through some research I found out that there really is such a thing. You have all seen the movie Bambi so I know you know where this is going. In the movie, Thumper the young rabbit remarks, in a loud voice, that the fawn Bambi “is kinda wobbly” and that “he doesn’t walk too good.” Thumper’s mother and father—carefully teaching their young rabbit through their wisdom— “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”

That was a very common correction growing up in Grandma Rundell's home. "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all." Followed many times by the comment, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". The latter is the Golden Rule. It's in many religions and it's just an ethic of being kind. Which brings me to the idea of political correctness and our insult-laden culture. When has it become OK to deliberately say hurtful and unkind things? People seek "conversations" and then blast the person who takes their bait with social shaming. As we endure the political climate right now the insult culture is so disturbing. Some say that insulting others, especially those on the opposite side of a social issue or political battle, is just “truth-telling” or a way to vent frustration.

I say through the authority of God's word that it is wrong and shameful! It is hurtful to the body of Christ and a horrible witness to the watching and reading world. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45 (or should it specifically say today, the fingers type) I want to speak Jesus. With His name darkness must step back. With the authority his Name brings, the atmosphere changes. Through the Name of Jesus there comes a "climate change" that is real and powerful. When we allow Jesus and His love to flow through us there is no room for divisive and harsh sayings. The name of Jesus is above every other name! I pray today that we would choose to walk in an anointing of kindness and verbal mercy. "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

“Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” Psalms 141:3 NIV
