No Greater Love

Today is a good day. Originally Memorial Day was set aside to specifically remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. This day was set aside as a day of thankfulness and remembrance. How honorable for these people to have paid the highest price for my freedom.

Jesus was teaching his disciples and said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 (ESV)

Sweet Jesus said this to his friends not hypothetically but knowing full well that he had come to this world to do exactly that. He knew that through his death, He would bring freedom and a new kind of God relationship to 'his friends.’

“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us.” 1 John 3:16 Jesus died so that you and I might live. What amazing love he had. Jesus also lived His life with a purpose. A military person has been intentionally trained. Everything they do is lived with that purpose. They know that they could be put in a situation where they would lay down their lives for the freedom of others. They don't know the details of the plan; they will wait the listen for the exact instructions.

Jesus lived His whole life with that same intention. His goal was to be obedient to His Father and follow the course. Jesus waited, listened, and obeyed all the way to the cross. He put others before himself. What a tremendous lesson and example that is for us.

  • We must wait on the Lord, and He will renew our strength.

  • Jesus said, "my sheep know my voice." We need to practice listening for it learning to recognize His voice and leading.

  • And lastly, obeying. Obeying is the biggie!

We wait on the Lord. We listen and recognize Him speak. Then we Trust Him completely and obey. We must obey that voice. “Be careful to obey all these words that I command you, that it may go well with you and with your children.” Deuteronomy 12:28
