Trust As A Verb
The verse of the day on my bible app is one I have loved for years. This is such a powerful direction for life. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust is a funny thing. For some people, trusting just happens, while others find trusting and the ability to trust a struggle every day of their life. There is ”trusting and the ability to trust.” I said it 2 different ways because it can be 2 different things. The definition of trust changes by one word between whether it is used as a noun or a verb. As a noun, it is; a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. When it’s a verb, the definition changes to; believing in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
So as followers of Jesus, how do we take trust that is a noun, just a word, and bring it to life as a verb? How does the ‘belief’ become what we ‘believe’? What does it take to have the knowledge, and then take action to choose to believe it? Trust is both an emotional and logical act. I also believe it’s a spiritual act. “Lean not on your own understanding.” I wonder if this then becomes the real action of making trust a verb in our lives? We are so used to trying to figure things out on a logical level. On the trust level, it defies our understanding. We have to take the ME part out of the quotient and let the rest stand alone. Just trust. There is so much “stuff” going on right now in our country that affects everything else. We would like to maybe think we are unaffected, but that is not true. I have felt like so much change, dissension, and uncertainty in every area of our lives, leaves us vulnerable to a lack of trust. All the solids around us are crumbling. Our national security, the very beliefs of our society are being challenged. Supposedly we have a “worldwide health crisis,” and hatred and violence are out of control. Even the weather has been crazy, violent, and unpredictable as hurricanes and forest fires ravish communities weekly! But Jesus.... we must find our trust in Jesus. He will be our peace. I will choose to resist trying to figure anything out on my own. I won’t lean on my ability to understand anything. Instead, I will acknowledge Jesus, knowing he will direct my life. Which is actually, verb Trust. I will trust in the Lord. Here’s another translation. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the LORD in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.” Proverbs 3:5-6 GNB
